What is your strategy for optimizing your website’s google search? Are you using social profiles? Oh, you think I mean the main ones you use for social media interaction, like twitter, Facebook, Instagram? You don’t quite understand what I mean.
I’m talking about using social profiles as a link building strategy. You think I’m joking. I’m not. Social profiles links are some of the most efficient and safe links you can build in your SEO strategy.
Here are reasons why you should be building out more social profiles to your website
1. They have extremely high DA
Have you ever put a social media website like Facebook or Twitter into Moz Site Explorer?

Twitter’s DA is 100/100, which means Google trusts Twitter…. A LOT. Can Twitter’s trust transfer over to your site? You bet. Having Twitter accounts is very natural and you can even have many of them and Google won’t wince one bit. We’ll talk more about that in a minute.
If you are just starting a site, the easiest and most natural thing you can do is to build social profiles. Make sure you add your website link in the ‘About’ section.
2. They are completely safe links – Go crazy if you like
Social media links are so safe you can build literally 100s of them without Google batting an eye.
An SEO acquaintance of mine has something like 40 twitter accounts all going to his website. And this is an SEO agency site… not a blog, not an authority site. He ranks #1 for many major cities in the US.
Can we take a page from his book?
3. Use them to boost your traffic
This is probably a given, but I’ll mention it anyway. We all know links are important to ranking in Google, but this is also because the more links you have, the more people should be clicking through to your site.
If you haven’t heard, CTR is one of the most important factors for ranking right now on Google. If you want traffic, social media is probably the best way to achieve that.
4. Get Do-Follow links this way
“Why build social profile links? Aren’t they all no-follow? Only do-follow links pass juice”.
You are right, to a point. Most are no-follow, and no link juice will pass. But not all of them, some of them are do-follow.
Ok, so give me a list of do-follow social profiles, and I’ll just build those.
The problem is that would be unnatural, and every time Google makes an update to their algorithm, they are trying to enforce natural ranking. So the best thing you can do would be just to build social profiles regardless of do-follow and no-follow.
Besides, no-follow links do count. Another SEO acquaintance of mine has ranked his SEO Agency for his home city on nothing but social profiles. So it does work, believe me.
5. You can add keywords in the URL
Here’s a tip to make your social media profiles even more powerful. If possible (it isn’t always), try to make the tail of the URL either your brand or money keyword.
For example, my facebook page URL looks like this: https://facebook.com/phaseshiftdigital
I have around 300 social profiles, and as many as possible have ‘phaseshiftdigital’ as the tail. The idea here is that Google sees the URL and will rank it for the keyword “phase shift digital.” You can also create social profiles with money keywords like “cityseo” and improve rankings this way. This works, try it.
Some Extra Notes
One thing that might concern you after you follow this advice, build a ton of social profiles and then look in an SEO tool like ahrefs.com or moz.com and see nothing there. These tools typically don’t display these type of links, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist or matter. In fact, you will probably confuse your competitors when they look up your site in Moz Site Explorer and don’t find any links, yet you are on page one! What the heck? (Note: I’m not saying you are going to rank on page one for a very competitive keyword like “new york city seo,” but it’s not improbable for a small town. As I mentioned before, I know someone that did it).
I’m also not saying that social media profile links are the only links you will need to build. You will most likely still need to use other effective strategies like guest posting, citations (if you are a local business) or whatever. But social media profiles should be the foundation of your link building. Start here.
In summary, social media profiles are a powerful yet underestimated strategy for increasing your site rankings. I hope you find this information useful. Let me know what you think in the comments.
